Smart security guide

What to consider before installing IP CCTV

IP CCTV is a security and infrastructure project at the same time. Camera count alone does not define a good design.

Start with the security objective

Decide what each area needs: general visibility, identification, entry monitoring, perimeter awareness or operational oversight. Camera placement should follow the objective.

Check network and cabling readiness

Switch capacity, PoE availability, cable routes, uplinks, segmentation and remote access can affect reliability. A camera system should not overload or weaken the wider network.

Plan storage and retention

Resolution, frame rate, number of cameras and retention period all influence storage. Requirements should be established before equipment is selected.

Include power and maintenance

Resilient power, safe mounting, environmental exposure, firmware, access controls and periodic maintenance should be part of the initial plan.
