Hardware lifecycle guide

How to plan a practical business hardware lifecycle

Hardware decisions become easier when the organisation knows what it owns, how critical each device is and when support or performance is likely to become a problem.

Build a usable inventory

Track the device, user or location, purchase date, warranty, operating system, support status and business role. The inventory should help decisions, not become paperwork.

Standardise where it reduces friction

A smaller number of supported models and configurations can simplify deployment, spares, support and user experience.

Replace by risk and impact

Age alone is not the only trigger. Unsupported software, repeated failure, poor performance, security limitations and operational criticality all matter.

Plan secure retirement

Data handling, account removal, asset records and appropriate disposal should be included when devices leave service.
